The 5th grade voted …

and the winning theme is:

Soaring to the Hills

What is next?? We need a logo – Class of 2011, we need your ideas!!

The 5th grade recognition team wants this year’s logo to be a winner. That is why we are asking you to design one for us! Every 5th grader will have a chance to enter their own design and vote for their favorite logo. Each class will choose their favorite logo from their own 5th grade class. After each class picks a favorite, we will have all of the 5th grade students vote for one of the four finalists. We can only choose one winning logo… WILL IT BE YOURS?

Here is how you do it:

The theme is Soaring to the Hills. The logo should have something to do with eagles, or flying. You can use pictures and /or words. Please use a plain 8 ½ x 11 white sheet of paper and make your logo with markers (one or two colors only because we will be putting the logo on a colored shirt). You could also make a computer design. PLEASE BE CREATIVE!!!

Logos should be turned in to your teacher by Monday Feb 7th. The winning logo will be featured on the 5th Grade Recognition Ceremony programs and t-shirts. GOOD LUCK!!

Thursday Newsletter

Dear Fifth Grade Families,

This week has been one of technology glitches. All is well now. Report cards were completed and the newsletter is finally on its way! Thank you for your patience. It is amazing how reliant we are on technology.

Can you believe that this week is February?! The kids are excited for many special upcoming events. We have our fieldtrip to Skateland for the annual fifth grade skate on February 18th. More information will be coming home on Thursday.

We would also like to have a small celebration on Monday, February 14th to celebrate friendship. Students are welcome to bring valentines to share. We do request, however, that if they are bringing one for anyone, that they bring one for everyone. This Thursday, children will be bringing home a class list of first names so that they can make sure not to miss anyone. If you are willing to send in a treat, drink, or paper product for this event, please email me or send in a note. I will send a confirmation so we are sure we have everything covered. We will be celebrating from 2:30-3:00 on Monday, 2/14.

On Tuesday, 2/1, students will receive/choose their piece for forensics. Their goal will be to work on memorizing their piece next week. Our performance will be on Friday, February 25th. We will be performing in the Multi-Purpose Room at 2:00. All are invited! I will also be videotaping the event so we can have a DVD which you can borrow to view at home. (I understand the schedules of working parents!)

This week we have been immersing ourself in poetry to understand in this very broad genre what is the essence of a poem. We will be using our knowledge to apply to both our reading and writing of poetry this month. The kids have been enjoying this excursion!

In social studies, we are looking at life in the British colonies. We are going to be acting out the triangle of trade this coming week to understand the early economy of North America and the start of slavery. We will also be looking at the Zenger trial from which our freedom of speech was born.

Thank you so much for all of your support!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Cindy

Thursday Newsletter

Dear Parents of Room 210:

Happy Thursday! First off, congratulations to all of you parents of members of the band and orchestra! What a wonderful performance they all gave today. I was so proud of them. I know how much support you give to them and think you deserve a round of applause, too!

Next week we wrap up Quarter 2. It is hard for me to believe that half the year has gone by! We will be taking our unit 6 math test on Wednesday. We will also be wrapping up our study of early colonization in North America and moving into the study of the Thirteen Colonies. In reading and writing, we will continue with our new book clubs and finish off our informational essays.

As we come to the halfway point, it is time to think about middle school. Today your child will be bringing home a registration packet from WHMS with lots of information about upcoming dates and registration needs. Please be on the watch for this. Thanks!

Mrs. Kreul has asked us to share the following opportunity with you and your student. We have so many wonderful writers in our class, that we like to keep them informed of any community writing opportunities that come our way.
Barnes & Noble is launching our first ever "My Favorite Teacher Contest." This program provides students with the opportunity to tell their communities how much they appreciate their teachers. Teachers from Kindergarten through Grade 12 are eligible for nomination. Awards include cash prizes for teachers and schools, Nook eBook Readers and more. The contest will be broken down into local and regional winners, from which the Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year will be chosen. Students can nominate their teacher by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that share how their teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher. Participating schools collect the essays and submit them to their local Barnes & Noble store for consideration. Entries will be judged on the compelling nature of the teacher's qualities, the sincerity of the student's appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. Please visit our website for more information: www.bn.com/myfavoriteteacher.

Wishing you a great Thursday and a happy weekend!

Survive Alive Field Trip

We had a wonderful time with the Brookfield Fire Department. Special thanks to Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Hodges for chaperoning our trip. The kids were able to learn about fire safety, practice fire escape procedures, see artifacts from fires, and learn a great deal about the importance of careful planning and thinking about potentially harmful situations. Thanks to the Brookfield Firefighters for this hands-on and important experience!
