Enjoy this link with a re-write of a modern song referring to Revolutionary Times.

We also talked about the events leading up to the revolution as a chain reaction....like this:

Thursday Update
Good Afternoon to the Parents and Families of Room 210!
Wow! We had a great time at Skateland! Thanks to the many of you who were able to join us! What a great opportunity to have some fun memories with your fifth grader! Special thanks to: Mrs. Joyce, Mr. Retzlaff, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Crivello, and Melissa's Aunt Kay. Hope I didn't miss anyone!
We are looking forward to entertaining you at our Forensic Celebration tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 in the Multi-Purpose Room on the second floor of Swanson. We will begin promptly so you'll want to arrive and find a good seat! The students have been practicing and have shown real improvement. Forensics helps reinforce reading fluency, comprehension skills, as well as so many oral communcation skills. Did you know that speaking in public speaking is number 2 on the list of things people fear. http://www.selfhelpcollective.com/top-10-fears.html We are so thrilled to start our students our as confident public speakers.
After such busy two weeks, we will be happy to settle back into our routine next week. We will be finishing up Unit 8 in math next Friday. This unit is a challenging one for our students. Multiplying fractions and mixed numbers is new to them this year. They are working very hard! We are also excited to jump into our final science unit on Mixtures and Solutions (Chemistry).
Have a wonderful day!
We'll look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow afternoon!

Thursday News
Good Morning!
It has been a wonderful week here in room 210. Monday afternoon the students had their final school valentine celebration. It was so nice to see students celebrating friendship with the entire class. So many of these students have known each other for so long. What a nice moment! Please check out our blog this weekend for pictures from the event. (www.ourfifthgradestory.blogspot.com)
Special thanks to the Joyce family, the Larsen family, the Daniels family, the Crivello family, and the Olander family for sending in treats/supplies to make our celebrations a special one. Thanks to Mrs. Nitka for joining us and helping us serve and clean up!
On Wednesday, many students from our room were involved in the chorus concert. They pulled together to put on a very entertaining program. After a late start and a substitute music teacher, the kids really worked hard and as a team! Congratulations to all of you proud parents who have supported your child as they pursue their music! You are giving them an amazing gift!
Tomorrow we head off to Skateland! It will be warm in the rink so please help your child choose comfortable and appropriate clothes. Also, students may bring money to buy refreshments. The videogames will be turned off. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome to come! We will be at Skateland at about 9:15 and will be skating for about 2 hours. Come and skate---or come and visit! Come and watch Mrs. Stemper on her annual wipeout! I will post lots of pictures on our website this weekend!
Next week Monday and Tuesday, your student will be participating in the 5th grade Human Growth and Development Education talks. Boys and girls will be talked to in separate groups. Mrs. Sommerville and I will meet with the girls. Mr. Gebauer and Mr. Marinello will speak with the boys. The goals for the chats are: to identify human reproductive anatomy; desciribe social, emotional, and physical implications of puberty; and to recognize human growth and development occurs at different rates. All of the materials we use are available for your review. We also encourage students to talk to their parents with any questions---so be ready. :)
On a final note, please know that no matter what is happening in the "outside world" that life here at Swanson continues as usual. I am having to leave for a sick child for a half day today, but will be here tomorrow--and every day to do what I love to do and to support your child as they grow and develop.
Have a wonderful warm weekend!

Thursday Newsletter
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
We would like to welcome Daniel Davies to our classroom. Daniel has come from London. We are looking forward to learning from him as he learns from us!
As we have all year, our math class is participating in the enrichment projects of the math series. Today we began Project 5. The students were each given a million dollar budget. They will be applying the skills learned thus far in this project, including decimals, percents, and pie charts. The project can be worked on at home by the student (or group) and is due next Friday. Their enthusiasm today was palpable! We have some future entrepeneurs to be sure!
Monday we will have our valentine celebration from 2:30-3:00 in the afternoon. Thanks to the following families for supplying paper goods and treats: the Joyce family, the Larsen family, the Crivello family, the Olander family, and the Davies family. All students are welcome to bring in valentines for their classmates. It is nice to enjoy this elementary tradition one last time before they head to middle school.
Speaking of middle school...I will be meeting next Thursday with the middle school guidance counselors to start the conversation of placement for your child. If you have any needs or concerns that we haven't already discussed, please feel free to email or call. We have many more opportunities for sharing as well.
Next week we are also looking forward to the chorus concert on Wednesday. The Swanson Super Singers are sure to put on a great show! On Friday, we have our fieldtrip to Skateland as well. Again, the video games will be unplugged, but the students are welcome to bring some money along for snacks and drinks. I will post videos and photos on the website (www.ourfifthgradestory.blogspot.com) What a fun and busy week ahead!
Don't forget to save the date! We will be having our forensic performance on Friday, February 25th at 2:00 in the Multi-purpose room. We will be starting promptly at 2:00. Chairs will be set up for parents. Our greeters will be there to seat you starting at 1:45. We look forward to performing for you!
One last reminder...Fifth grade bake sale on Tuesday during voting here at Swanson!
Thanks so much!
